Weather
Canada report and daily forecast should be your inevitable partner when
organizing a trip
to
Canada and its attractions.
Significant
factor for Canada weather is latitude. More North you go, colder it is. That is why the south of
Canada, close to the border with US, is the most populated, while
colder North is much less.
This article is about the Canadian climate and provides useful info about weather in Canada, weather per season and per regions.
For the current
weather, radar and satellite maps, daily forecast with the expected
temperatures, wind, precipitation, weather alerts and seven-day
forecast, you should check one of the weather websites, The Weather Channel, Accuweather, The Weather Network or any other that deals with the weather.
General Info about Weather Canada
Most of Canada has a temperate climate. Temperature varies with seasons
and latitudes, the same with weather in Canada. It can also vary
considerably from day to day with the
movements of air masses. Canada is so big and temperatures
fluctuate significantly from one part of the country to another.
Weather Canada
in January - Winter in Canada
Typical for weather Canada are its winters that are long and hard,
where more than 60 % of the country
has an average January temperature of -18ºC.
January
is usually the coldest month across Canada. If you look at the weather
Canada stat data, freezing minimum temperatures are standard. Deep
freeze is normal for Arctic area and Nunavut (average -30 to -40ºC).
Maximum
temperatures across continental Canada are normally lower
that -10ºC, around 0ºC in southern Ontario, and above 0ºC in
coastal BC and south of Nova Scotia.
The reasons for the very cold winters over most of Canada are its flat
landscape east of Rockies and high
latitude of much of the country. Since there is no obstruction for the
cold Arctic air, we have cold conditions during the winter and spring
time.
Weather Canada
in July - Summer in Canada
Be
prepared if you are planning a trip to Canada's far north-east,
Ellesmere and Baffin Islands, as the temperature can drop sooo much
below
freezing.
Minimum temperatures are above 10ºC in southern
Canada and exceed 15ºC along the north shores of Lake Ontario
and
Erie and St. Lawrence River valley to Montreal.
Plentiful
sunshine with a maximum temperatures that exceed 25ºC, occurs in the
valley area of southern British Columbia, in southern Ontario
and
along the St. Lawrence River valley almost to the city of Quebec and
parts of central New Brunswick.
Maximum temperatures along
coastal regions of Atlantic Canada and British Columbia are moderate,
because of the ocean influence, around 20ºC.
Summer
thunderstorms are also common throughout Canada. Occasionally, these
may
become severe. Tornadoes also occur throughout Canada, with May to
September being prime months. The peak season is June and early July in
southern Ontario, Alberta and southeastern Quebec.
Canada Weather
by Regions
Weather
Canada - Eastern Canada (Atlantic region)
Winters in Eastern Canada and Atlantic region are warmer than inside
the
continent but still with a snow.
During the summer, temperatures are lower and changeable because of the
Atlantic Ocean influence and cold
Labrador current. This area is very liable to sea fog and it is
considered as the foggiest sea area in the world.
The frequent
occurrence of icebergs in summer makes this area attractive for
iceberg-watching.
Frequent changes of weather, cloudy and rainy days are typical for all
over the year.
This
area is one of the least sunny regions of Canada, with sunshine days of
only two to three hours in winter, and seven to eight in summer.
Weather
Canada - Central region (Quebec, Montreal, Toronto)
From
mid-December to mid-March, Ottawa and Quebec have severe winters, with
lots of snow (one of the snowiest region in this part of North
America). Toronto, located on the shore of Lake
Ontario, has appreciably higher winter temperatures.
Summers are quite warm with considerable amounts of
sunshine, averaging eight to nine hours a day. Thanks to the warmth of
the lake waters, which do not usually freeze over
completely until December, make this part as one of the
warmest parts
of Canada.
Weather
in Canada - The Canadian Prairies (Winnipeg, Saskatoon,
Regina, Edmonton, Calgary)
Winters
are long and severe, with a light snowfall. Minimum temperatures are
not much higher than
those recorded farther north in the Canadian Arctic.
The summers are relatively short, but warm, with moderate
rainfall. Sunshine hours per day, average three to
four in winter and nine to ten in summer.
The transition from summer to
winter and from winter to summer often occurs very quickly.
Weather
Canada - Western Canada (Banff, Jasper, Vancouver,
Victoria)
Even with the often changeable weather in Canada, this area is perhaps the most
climatically
favorable region in Canada.
The Coast Mountains have a
very heavy precipitation while some of the valleys have a very low.
The coastal region, with numerous
islands included, has a very mild winter climate, with lots of
rainfall, and is the warmest of any part of Canada.
The summers are fairly sunny with an average sunshine eight to nine
hours a day, and two to three in winter. The coast fog is a frequent
occurrence.
Weather
Canada - Northern Canada
Going northwards to the
North Pole there is noticeable decrease in temperature. Large part of
Canada lies within the Arctic Circle, with severe winter
and prolonged frost.
If you are visiting Northern Canada attractions you should
consider a detail preparation. The northern
coast of Canada on the Arctic Ocean is permanently ice-bound or
severely obstructed by ice floes, most of the year.
And again, when planning a trip to Canada tourist attractions and cities, check weather Canada, current conditions and forecast first.
