Visiting American Niagara Falls

Mike and Lily
(from US)

Having travelled and seen quite a bit of our planet, some experiences stand out more than others. The Finnish forests, the Empire state building, the Eiffel tower, then there are those experiences that not only stand out, but also make you want to go back and re-live every second of it.

The Niagara falls and state park, is many different things to many different people, I am going to share what it was to me. On an early summer's afternoon in July back in 2008, I visited the Niagara falls. You can tell you are approaching something special because the temperature drop as you approach the falls is very evident.

The falls has two side, the American and the Canadian side. I approached from the American. The falls is adorned by beautiful lawns, make sure to look out for the 86 degree longitude indicator. There are many ways to look at the falls, the sky-deck, the tornado deck and arguably, the most famous, the Maid of the Mist.

The sky-deck is a tall tower that gives a bird's eye view of the falls and the surrounding areas. It is calm and relaxing and a great spot to view the fireworks that are lit every evening. To approach the tornado deck you need nerves of steel.

You first have to walk all around the park to the other side, go down a long tunnel shaft and exit out at the bottom. There is a walk way and then you see it, the American side of the falls in all its glory and you are standing about 15 feet away from it. It is truly a humbling experience.

For that extra 'oomph', the tornado deck sits right under the infamous Bridal Veil Falls which is a smaller tributary of the giant. You can stand right under it but be very careful as the force of the water is enough to knock you off your feet. This also doubles up and a lovely back massage, the gushing force of the water soothes the tired muscles but be careful, it can be dangerous.

My day ended with a trip on the Maid of the Mist, a fleet of boats that take visitors in the bay of the falls itself. Here, you will be blasted by mist from the falls and you cannot miss the rainbow.

Be sure to keep a video camera in hand to record every magical moment of it. With the ride, you also get a close up of the horse-shoe falls which is on the Canadian side, beautiful and majestic. The day ends with a wonderful firework display against the falls which is now lit. A sight guaranteed to bring out the romantic even in the most hardest of shells.

After the display, you can have dinner at the HardRock cafe, be sure to click a picture of the Chevy on the roof. No, I am not lying. Pay a visit to the gift shop where you get all the Niagara memorabilia you could want. Especially the sailors hat. The Niagara is certainly a magical place filled with wonder and history. A must very for anyone and everyone.
