Niagara on the Lake is a charming, romantic and historic town;
Canada's
best-kept secret. It is also one of Southern Ontario's most picturesque
towns with numerous small attractions, galleries, boutiques, lovely
inns.This
historic town is conveniently situated close to the Niagara Falls and
Toronto, on the scenic Niagara Parkway, at the mouth of Niagara River
and on the shore of Lake Ontario.
This place used to be a secret for us as well, but not anymore.
We have discovered it and confirmed its title as the "prettiest town in Canada". It
was a
perfect romantic destination for us, but also for
many honeymooners and newly-weds.

From Niagara Falls to Niagara on the Lake
NOTL is small by area, but great in what it has to
offer,
with inspiring scenery, architecture, wineries, boutiques, world known
Shaw Theater and
live performances.
The
route from Niagara Falls to NOTL, along Niagara Parkway, includes an amazing view
of Niagara River and Niagara Gorge on one side and vineyards, orchard farms and Niagara Escarpment on the other.
If
you are planning to visit NOTL,
our recommendation is to drive. Driving along the picturesque Niagara
Parkway and
through the local fruit and wine country is absolutely fabulous.
What is waiting for you is not only a scenic countryside, but lovely
restored Victorian and Georgian styled houses and miles of vineyards,
dotted with Niagara
wineries.

Visiting Niagara on the Lake and its Attractions
Historic Niagara on the Lake was the former capital of Upper Canada
and the first capital of Ontario, established by Lieutenant-Governor
John Graves Simcoe.
NOTL
has retained
its 19th-century charm with all grand
mansions, beautifully
restored historical brick houses, where downtown streets are lined with
mature
trees, exciting storefronts, and hanging flower baskets.
This
small town is a host to many historic sites, colorful gardens
and parks,
small charming galleries, over 100 bed and
breakfasts and cute little stores, mainly situated on
the Queen Street.
And your typical trip to this town will be, like we did many times,
strolling all these great and lovely places.

Hall, a military museum, located
on the River Road, below Fort George, with a view on the Niagara river

Barracks, the area where British

- Fort Mississauga, which is now part of the golf
course.
- Old Bank
House, formerly the Bank of Upper
Canada, built in 1817.

The
world-class theater company Shaw
Festival goes along with
Niagara on the Lake visit, and if you want to visit one of the shows,
you have to book it on time (in advance). There are ten to twelve
shows annually, in three theaters, plus many concerts, seminars,
tours...
From historic sites and attractions, take a look at the largest
Niagara's historic site, Fort
George. It was built at the end of the
eighteenth century, to protect British interest in Upper Canada. This
place was
the key battle site in 1812 War.

the first census in Canada was held here, in 1782, the first gristmill
in Ontario was built in 1783 and the first legislature of Upper Canada,
