Niagara Falls in Winter

Spectacular Niagara Falls in Winter, with ice formations and popular events.
Why winter in Niagara Falls is amazing?

Niagara Falls in winter is full of contrasts. One cold day, you will see that Falls and surrounding area is transformed to a crystal wonderland, and days after warmer weather brings melting and slush.

Visiting Niagara Falls in winter

niagara falls in winter What makes winter in Niagara Falls so special is the constant mist rising from the falling water that coats and freezes on every tree twig, lamp post, railing and street, making a sparkling delight.

And when the almost frozen Niagara Falls and formed ice, breaks, you will experience another wonder, where huge ice floes are racing down the Niagara River and tumble over the Falls.

Once it reaches the shore, it jams. The mass of the jammed ice grows, the water level drops and the ice mass becomes suspended like a bridge. Many years ago, the ice bridges were popular attraction. They can still be seen but not in that immense and spectacular way as before.

If you are planning to visit Niagara Falls on winter, it is good to know that majority of the attractions are open, except for the Maid of Mist, Marineland, Whirlpool Jetboat and Cave of the Winds.

Niagara Falls entertainment is still big and promising, since both Niagara Casinos and the funky attractions on Clifton Hill are open year-round.

A good thing about winter in Niagara Falls is that cold weather discourages the large crowds, so you actually have more time and personal space to enjoy the visit. And if you stayed in one of the Clifton Hill motels you will probably appreciate heart-shaped hot tubs more at the end of the long cold day.

Lovely Niagara Falls winter brings a joy to its residents and visitors, and offers many unique attractions and outdoor activities.

Niagara Falls in winter and popular events

Niagara Parks Winter Wonderland is one of them. From the beginning of November until the first week of January, you can see a light show, beautifully decorated 5 km route, stretching from Dufferin Islands along the Niagara Parkway, to the Whirlpool Bridge. This great show includes more than two million trees and ground lights and over 100 animated lighting displays.

Winter in Niagara Falls is also worth seeing because of a special natural event, when thousands of gulls and terns congregate around the Falls and rapids. It is estimated that over hundred bird varieties have been recorded along the river.

Icewine that is made from the frozen grapes has its own event. And guess what, winter is the only season when you can see how frozen grapes are picked and prepared. Try to see an Icewine festival when visiting Niagara Falls in winter.

New Year's Eve celebration - combining it with Festival of Lights, you will enjoy live entertainment at Victoria Park.

Candlelight Stroll through Niagara-on-the-Lake takes place on the first weekend of December, and features Christmas entertainment, carols by local choirs and town stroll.

Winter time combined with a nightly illumination and winter Festival of Lights transforms the area in the spectacular palette of color.

Niagara Falls in winter is like a jewel, providing the perfect scenario for photos. The wonderful sight of the frozen mist with a sparkling crystal-like appearance and with the sunshine effects on the ice coating is such an inspiration for the amazing pictures.
