Maid of the Mist Boat Ride

by Jordan
(from America)

I have been to Niagara Falls twice in my life, so far. Both times have been different experiences.

The first time was probably around 10 years ago. I went with the VA Employees Association (a work group that I used to belong to). The group would arrange for trips and getaways that didn't cost a lot of money. Most trips were overnight trips and/or weekend getaways and that was just enough time for me to get some rest and relaxation in before the start of a new work week.

Anyway, when we finally got to Niagara Falls on this trip, it was freezing cold; but I was excited because I knew I was going to go on the Maid of the Mist! I had heard that it was a "not to be missed" attraction at Niagara Falls. So, our trip organizer got all of our tickets and then we went to go get those raincoats that they give out. It was so cold and the lines were so long to wait to get on the boat.

I remember thinking that I didn't even want to look at the water because that would just make me feel even colder than I already was! So, I didn't look at it. I just closed my eyes and kept thinking that I couldn't wait for this to be over.

So, in other words, I didn't enjoy my first ride on the Maid of the Mist. After I got off of the boat, I went to sit on the balcony with a cup of hot tea to try to warm up and people watch.

My next trip was several years ago and I went with my sisters and my two nieces. We drove up for the day and we were going to stay in Erie, PA for the night since we planned to do some things in Erie that weekend. This time, it was hot! It was so hot, I couldn't wait to get on that boat to get some of the mist from the Falls splashed on my face to cool me down a little bit. Oh yes! It felt great. I was instantly cooled off. I looked right up at the Falls. I tried to take in as much of this beautiful sight as I possibly could.

Of course, the Canadian side is much more grander than the United States side. Didn't matter to me. I was happy that it was able to see it again and it wasn't so cold. I didn't even care that my glasses were splashed with the mist and that I couldn't see two feet in front of me. I think everyone felt the same way. They all just wanted to get cooled down and this was the best way to do it.

After we got off the boat, it was still hot so we went to one of the refreshment stands and got some soda pop. After that, we drove back to Erie to continue with the rest of our mini-vacation.
