Bridal Veil Falls in Niagara Falls

Did you know that Niagara Falls is comprised of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls, American and Bridal Veil Falls?

Bridal Veil Falls is the smallest of the three Niagara Falls with a span of only 56 feet, has a direct fall of 78 feet that crashes onto the large rocks below, making the total drop 181 feet.

Bridal Veil waterfall tumbles from the edge of the Goat Island in Niagara Falls State Park, and is separated from the main American Falls by Luna Island, and from Canadian Horseshoe Falls by the Goat Island.

You will then walk out along the wooden staircases, walkways and platforms, constructed on the rocks bringing you up alongside the Bridal Veil waterfall and partially American waterfalls.

History of Bridal Veil Falls

Bridal Veil Falls was named because of its similar appearance to a wedding bride's veil. As it is very close to the American waterfall it looks like it is part of it. Luna Island actually separates these two waterfalls.

Goat Island that separates American from Canadian waterfalls is so close to the American shore, that is resulting to have much less of Niagara River flow to plunge over the edge.

Less erosion on the American side resulted in the broken cataract between the river bank and Goat Island and formation of the third waterfall also known as Iris and Luna Falls.

Luna Island is accessible via a pedestrian bridge from Goat Island.
There is an interesting, romantic story, how Luna Falls got a name. Niagara Falls is a great location for rainbows (or solar bows) which are made when the sunlight reflects off the Niagara Falls mist.

Over one hundred years ago, Niagara Falls was also one of the best locations for rainbows and lunar bows. A Lunar bow is a rainbow created by the light of the moon shining on the mist created by the Falls.

In 1860 lunar bows were last reported. The best time was when the moon was full and high and the sky clear of clouds. One of the best locations to view this phenomenon was Luna Island on the American side of the river, right where the Bridal Veil waterfalls is.
